Finally – A reality tv show even _I_ wouldn’t watch…

Posted by Lessa on May 30, 2007 in this-n-that |

Ya’ll know I am hopelessly addicted to bad reality tv (Survivor may be on hiatus, but Watching Survivor is still posting at least twice a week – Survivor: Rewind, where I watch the first season for the first time and recap as I go, PLUS recaps and comments on the brand new Pirate Masters that premieres thursday night in the regular Survivor Slot. Whoo! (don’t forget Watching Rachael Ray is mine too..) /451 pimpage.)

Ahem. As I was saying – I love me some reality tv – but now I’ve heard of one that even I wouldn’t watch.

A Dutch reality show that claims to be trying to draw attention to a
shortage of organ donors said Tuesday it will go ahead with a program
in which a terminally ill woman will choose a contestant to receive one
of her kidneys.Big Donor Show has been attacked as unethical and
tasteless. At least one member of the Dutch parliament plans to ask the
government to block Friday’s broadcast.

“We know that this program is super controversial and some people
will think it’s tasteless, but we think the reality is even more
shocking and tasteless: waiting for an organ is just like playing the
lottery,” Laurens Drillich, chairman of the BNN network, said in a
statement.

He said waiting lists in the Netherlands are more than four years long and 200 patients die annually for lack of a donor.

The network identified the donor as “Lisa,” a 37-year-old woman with
an inoperable brain tumour. During the show, she will hear interviews
with the three candidates, their families and friends before choosing
who will get her kidney.

The show is being produced by Endemol NV, the creator of the Big Brother series.

I’m all for tasteless exploitation and 15 minutes of fame? But um. No. Just no.

Today’s first game of the season – won by forfiet. Heh. Mairiah WOULD have been playing 2nd base. And she’s learning to pitch this year. Pup has her first game tomorrow.

SO yes, prepared to be bored by the tales of my kids and Little League. Assuming they don’t ban me for wanting to maim people. Heh.

AHHHH! RUN AWAY!

The bear necessities

Posted by Lessa on May 27, 2007 in this-n-that with Comments closed |

Yesterday was spent mostly on the road with my dad, as we had a training session up in Anchorage. This necessitated leaving at 4:30 am. This resulted in a very, very, very sleepy Lessa.

Fortunately, Papa – more awake and alert, though half blind, of course – was driving and awake enough to hit the breaks about 5 miles from my house, as for the first time in the 30 years I’ve lived in Alaska….

I saw a BEAR that wasn’t in a zoo. A real. live. AMBLING ACROSS THE STREET in front of our car BROWN BEAR! Picture? of COURSE I didn’t get a damn picture, because I didn’t have my camera out or close enough to get quick access and he was gone and we were passed by then…

Oh, and? it was about 1/2  a mile from where The Boy was having a schools out party with his friends later in the day.

Gulp.

So, when we called folks at a reasonable hour to let them know we were safe in anchorage (blah blah blah oh and…) I let Nana know, and heard her pout because 1 – she didn’t get to see it and 2 – I didn’t have my camera out. Bad Lessa!

Then! After hours of training in uncomfortable seats, Papa and I headed back home about 3:30pm. We stopped for an earlyish dinner at Girdwood and then started the long drive home, doing our best to dodge the hooligan fishermen and women and kids who kept walking across the road in front of the blind man driving the van. Idiots.

(What, you don’t let your half blind father drive ya around? Got no sense of adventure, do ya?! Wuss.)

Round about Cooper Landing, we passed a group of cars with folks out with their cameras, I whipped my head to the other side just in time to see ANOTHER DAMN BEAR as we flashed by. This one was a blackie, sitting on the hill.  Color me stunned (and still, cameraless. DAMMIT i’m outa PRACTICE or something!!)

I don’t see any bears at all (cept in a zoo) for the WHOLE TIME I’ve lived in Alaska, almost 30 years, and I see TWO IN THE SAME DAY?!? Must be because my camera wasn’t as handy as it is most times… ya think?

So that’s MY latest adventure. What’s yours?
