Ok – so I still have Poetic Voices up and running and stuff – and been having something of a writers block (obviously – 14 entries in 8 months? oh my god. *L*) so I joined a poetry board and was hoping to get inspired… and so far so good – there is an AMAZING group of talented poets over at This so called life..<\/a><\/p>\n

Anyway -they are a part of a group of workshop boards called the Poetry Board League, and they hold monthly contests for their members – individual boards can send in 1-3 poems for each contest, and compete against other writers\/other boards for board of the year. <\/p>\n

Well.<\/p>\n

Guess who had a work nominated today? *BEEEEEEEEEEG GRIN*<\/p>\n

Yes indeedy… ME! I am shocked, awed and stunned… and couldn’t be more pleased about it! I honestly feel that it’s<\/p>\n

(common – you know it’s coming)<\/p>\n

AN HONOR TO BE NOMINATED!!! Even if i don’t move on to the contest this month, knowing they felt my piece was good enough to be nominated is enough for me.<\/p>\n

It was one of my slam pieces (should I ever discover the balls to participate in another slam) and I even recorded it so that they could hear it ‘preformed’.<\/p>\n

Just like me

The little box is labeled “race” and
\nI wonder what we are running to
\nOr maybe running from
\nThey look at me funny while
\nI ponder the question,
\nGiving it the thought it deserves. <\/p>\n

I guess I am white –
\nI certainly am
\nAccording to the color of skin
\nBlinding Alaskan tan
\nPale as beached whale
\nSometimes freckled and red
\nFrom the Midnight Sun <\/p>\n

Of course, the freckles
\nAre from Irish stock
\nThough there’s a bit of
\nEverything else thrown in too
\nA regular Heinz 57
\nCrossed with hillbilly
\nThat’s me. <\/p>\n

The mind wanders then
\nAs my mind so often does
\nTo the first time I saw a black boy
\nI wondered if his skin
\nTasted of chocolate
\nAnd if momma would skin me
\nFor licking his cheek to see <\/p>\n

Spice scented salt.
\nJust like me. <\/p>\n

And then to the Native boy
\nThe color of creamed coffee
\nI wondered if his skin
\nWould feel like suede
\nAnd if mom would freak
\nWhen I touched him (all over)
\nJust to see <\/p>\n

Smooth satin soft
\nJust like me. <\/p>\n

Then farther on
\nTo the African-American man
\nWho had me for just one night
\nHolding my body captive
\nWhile ripping through me
\nAgain and again
\nI wondered what mom would say
\nTo see me slave to a man’s whims
\nAs his ancestor’s once were to ours <\/p>\n

He enjoyed the conquest.
\nJust like me. <\/p>\n

And now, again, I stare
\nAt the box named “race”
\nWhere the answer is demanded
\nAnd with a smirk
\nI write in my own reply
\nA single word knowing – <\/p>\n

You are all
\nJust like me. <\/p>\n
